Someone Is Studying Europe’s Defense Supply Chain

Just after midnight Monday, an alarm sounded at a WB Electronics facility in Skarżysko-Kamienna, Poland. Local reporting said a masked person carrying a backpack was captured on surveillance video climbing the fence before a localized fire caused an estimated $4 million in damage. No one was injured. Polish prosecutors are examining possible foreign-intelligence involvement alongside offenses related to deliberate fire and terrorism, and Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said everything indicated sabotage. No suspect or country has been publicly charged. The more important question is why this facility?

Skarżysko-Kamienna is not WB Group’s headquarters or its only production site. It is, however, part of the industrial network supporting components used in systems such as FlyEye and Warmate and a node in Poland’s effort to expand defense production to wartime scale. That makes it useful to think about the target not simply as a factory, but as part of a supply chain.

Poland is building for a different kind of war. Recent procurement has included hundreds of Warmate systems, FlyEye reconnaissance systems, and Gladius battery fire modules, while Polish and Central European defense production has expanded sharply since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As production grows, the number of facilities, suppliers, transport routes, warehouses, and specialized component manufacturers that matter to the defense ecosystem grows with it.

If Polish investigators establish foreign direction, the apparent method is notable for its simplicity. A fence, a backpack, and a fire are a very different proposition from a sophisticated cyberattack or precision strike. Sabotage does not have to destroy an entire factory to be useful. It can impose costs, interrupt production, force security changes, create uncertainty, and test how quickly a company and government respond.

Europe has already seen versions of this model. Investigators have tied arson, incendiary parcels, route mapping, and other low-cost operations to networks accused of working for Russian military intelligence. German authorities have also described plots involving defense-industry leadership and, on September 1, 2026, formally blamed Russia for an attempted explosive-drone attack near Leipzig/Halle airport and a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. Moscow has denied involvement in such accusations.

Poland has not publicly blamed Russia for the WB Electronics fire, and there is no basis to do that before investigators finish their work. But target selection itself deserves attention. Public information can tell an adversary what a company makes. It takes a more deliberate understanding of a defense-industrial ecosystem to identify which smaller nodes could create disruption out of proportion to their size.

The question is not only who set the fire. It is who understood that this particular facility mattered, what else they may have mapped, and whether similar nodes are being watched elsewhere in Europe. It will be that somebody is studying the supply chain.
