The handoff plan

Choose people, not just supplies.

For each person who may need help, name the primary helper and a backup. Ask what that person needs to stay safe, move, communicate, take medication, or reunite. Get their input rather than making a plan around them.

Settle the child pickup question.

Know the school’s emergency and reunification procedures. Put authorized adults on its list and make sure those adults have the address, identification, and any instructions they need. Give children an age-appropriate explanation of who will come if you cannot.

Plan for access and medical needs.

Keep a current medication list, equipment instructions, clinician information, and the supplies the person actually uses. Identify an accessible destination and transportation options. If a caregiver cannot arrive, the backup should know what to do and whom to call.

Include the animals.

Keep identification current, a carrier or leash ready, and food, medication, and veterinary records together. Check pet policies at the places you might go. Arrange a nearby person who can collect a pet if you are away from home.
