One of the most common phrases you'll hear after a major crisis is
"Nobody could have seen this coming."
I've spent much of my career studying crises, intelligence failures, terrorist attacks, disasters, and geopolitical shocks. One thing I've learned is that most major events don't appear out of nowhere.
They leave clues.
The indicators are often there.
The challenge is that those indicators rarely look important at the time.
We recognize them afterward.
We connect the dots after the fact.
And then we convince ourselves that nobody could have known.
But that's usually not the problem.
The problem is that every society develops blind spots.
Every generation assumes certain systems will continue working.
Every generation becomes comfortable with certain dependencies.
Every generation stops questioning certain assumptions.
Until something happens.
So today I want to talk about America's blind spots.
And, I want to explore a different question
What assumptions are we making today that we may not be examining closely enough?
Because the future rarely surprises us because we lacked information.
The future surprises us because we misunderstood what information actually mattered.
Blind Spot #1: Complexity
America is an incredibly complex society.
Most of us interact with that complexity every day without even noticing it.
Think about something as simple as buying a cup of coffee with a credit card.
That transaction depends on electrical power, internet connectivity, payment processors, financial institutions, cybersecurity systems, cloud infrastructure, and data centers operating simultaneously.
Most people see a transaction that takes five seconds.
What they don't see is the enormous system operating behind it.
The same is true for water coming out of your faucet, fuel showing up at a gas station, or a package arriving at your front door.
Complexity creates capability.
But it also creates dependencies.
And the more complex a system becomes, the harder it becomes to fully understand how disruptions might spread through it.
The question isn't whether complexity is good.
The question is whether we understand how dependent we have become on systems we rarely think about.
Blind Spot #2: Efficiency Versus Resilience
For decades, organizations have worked to become faster, leaner, and more efficient.
Businesses reduced inventory.
Supply chains became global.
Processes were optimized.
Costs were reduced.
In many ways, these changes were incredibly successful.
But efficiency and resilience are not the same thing.
During the COVID pandemic, Americans experienced shortages of everything from pharmaceuticals and personal protective equipment to baby formula and we all can’t forget toilet paper.
The lesson wasn't simply that supply chains could be disrupted.
The lesson was that systems optimized for normal conditions are not always designed to absorb unexpected shocks.
A race car is optimized for speed.
A four-wheel-drive truck is optimized for difficult conditions.
Both have value.
But they were built for different purposes.
Resilience often receives attention only after it has been tested.
Blind Spot #3: The Infrastructure We Never See
When most people hear the word infrastructure, they think of roads, bridges, airports, and highways.
Those things matter.
But some of the most important infrastructure in America is largely invisible.
Cloud computing services.
Fiber optic networks.
Electrical substations.
GPS timing systems.
And yes, Data centers.
Most Americans think GPS helps them find the nearest gas station.
In reality, GPS supports telecommunications networks, financial transactions, transportation systems, emergency services, and portions of our electrical grid.
The average person understands what happens when a bridge closes.
Far fewer understand what happens when a major cloud provider experiences an outage.
Or when communications networks are disrupted.
Or when GPS services become degraded.
The challenge with invisible infrastructure is simple.
People tend not to think about what they cannot see.
And when we stop thinking about something, we often stop evaluating its vulnerabilities.
Blind Spot #4: Too Much Information, Not Too Little
Historically, one of the greatest challenges was obtaining information.
Today, the challenge is often the opposite.
We're surrounded by information.
News alerts.
Social media.
Videos.
Podcasts.
Commentary.
Artificial intelligence.
The problem is no longer access.
The problem is determining what matters.
During a major incident, thousands of reports, videos, social media posts, and competing narratives can emerge within hours. We saw how quickly Iran pushed out fake news at the beginning of the conflict.
Weak signals are not necessarily hidden.
They're often buried beneath noise.
We're also entering a period where seeing a video may no longer be enough to prove something happened.
AI-generated content, synthetic audio, and increasingly sophisticated manipulation are changing how information is created and consumed.
The information environment itself has become a homeland security challenge.
Not because information is scarce.
But because clarity is.
Blind Spot #5: The People Closest to the Problem
The fifth blind spot is one we rarely discuss.
When people think about national security, they often think about Washington.
Federal agencies.
Military organizations.
Intelligence services.
Those institutions matter.
But one lesson I've learned from working crisis response efforts is that the first people solving a problem are usually not sitting in Washington.
They're already on the ground.
The people closest to the problem are usually the first people dealing with it.
The first people making decisions.
The first people identifying what is actually happening.
This reality exists across almost every type of crisis.
The local layer often sees a problem before the national conversation catches up.
That's worth remembering.
Blind Spot #6: Dependence Without Awareness
This may be the most important blind spot of all.
Think about how many systems you rely on every day.
Again.. Electricity.
Cellular networks.
Internet connectivity.
Banking systems.
Water treatment facilities.
Transportation networks.
GPS.
Now ask yourself a simple question.
How long could you function if your phone stopped working?
Not just phone calls.
Banking.
Navigation.
Authentication.
Communications.
Daily life.
Most of us don't think about these systems because they work.
The more dependable a system becomes, the less we think about it.
That isn't a criticism.
It's human nature.
But it does create blind spots.
Because the things we depend on most are often the things we examine the least.
Blind Spot #7: The Human Factor
At the end of the day, most blind spots are not technological failures.
They're human failures.
Human beings are remarkably good at adapting to normal conditions.
We're less effective at recognizing low-probability, high-impact risks.
We normalize.
We rationalize.
We assume tomorrow will look a lot like today.
Before the Texas power crisis, most residents never seriously considered losing electricity for days during a winter storm.
Not because they were careless.
Because the system had always worked.
Reliability created assumptions.
Organizations do it.
Governments do it.
Corporations do it.
Everyone does it.
We become attached to assumptions.
We become comfortable with patterns.
We mistake familiarity for certainty.
And that's often where blind spots begin.
Conclusion: The Question We Should Be Asking
Most surprises are only surprising in hindsight.
Once an event occurs, people begin connecting dots that were visible all along.
The challenge is recognizing those dots before the event.
That's what intelligence is supposed to do.
Not predict the future.
Not claim certainty.
Not eliminate risk.
The goal is to challenge assumptions.
To identify vulnerabilities.
To recognize weak signals before they become obvious.
Because the greatest threats are often not the dangers we fail to see.
They are the assumptions we stopped questioning.
