Open Doors, Thoughtful Plans

Begin with the people and the purpose.

Before purchasing equipment, decide who is responsible for safety decisions, emergency planning, communications, children, medical response, and coordination with public safety. A small team with defined roles is more useful than a collection of measures no one owns.

Invite local law enforcement, fire services, and emergency management to walk the property with you. A vulnerability assessment can identify practical improvements while preserving the congregation’s character and daily life.

Build a layered plan.

• Access and awareness: Know which doors should be open, which should be monitored, and how volunteers report a concern without creating panic.
• Emergency action: Document evacuation, shelter, lockdown, accountability, family reunification, medical response, and crisis-communication procedures.
• Training: Make sure ushers, children’s volunteers, staff, and safety-team members understand their roles. Exercises should be announced, professionally planned, and appropriate for the age and needs of participants.
• Continuity: Plan how the congregation will communicate and continue essential support if the building cannot be used.
• Cybersecurity: Protect contact lists, giving systems, calendars, livestreams, and internal communications as carefully as physical spaces.

Keep care at the center.

Security plans should include counseling, spiritual care, disability access, children’s needs, and support for staff and volunteers after a difficult event. Reporting should be based on credible threats and observable behavior, never on identity.

Interfaith relationships can also strengthen readiness. Nearby congregations may be able to share meeting space, supplies, language support, transportation, or trusted community contacts.

Open doors and thoughtful plans are not opposites. The plan protects the welcome.
